The Urban Renewal Authority says a redevelopment project it began in Sai Ying Pun today will provide around 165 flats and improve the living conditions of the neighborhood.
The 1,100 square-meter site covers about 10 buildings on Sung Hing Lane, Des Voeux Road West and Kwai Heung Street.
The buildings, constructed between the 1950s and 70s, are six to eight stories tall, have no lifts, and are in poor condition.
Some of the units have been subdivided and it’s estimated there are about 110 households in the buildings, with a total of 235 residents.
Thirteen ground floor shops will also be affected by the redevelopment.
The URA said the new flats will be about 400 to 500 square feet in size and the project is expected to be completed in 2026 or 2027.
Officials said the redevelopment will create more open space in the area and provide better access to a nearby playground.-RTHK
