MTR Repairs on line at water-effected stations

Urgent repair work on water seepage at three MTR West Island Line stations University, Sai Ying Pun and Kennedy Town will take some time, the rail company’s head of operations has warned.

Francis Li Shing-kee said underground water has seeped into all three stations, and changes in the weather have also led to water dripping from air-conditioning systems.

For instance, in the Exit A lift lobby at University, water dripped from ceilings, while in the walkways of Exit B water seeped in along the wall. A sign warns passengers of the slippery floor.

Li said the station lies tens of meters below ground, so it was possible for a small amount of water to seep in. “It will not affect the structure and it is totally not related to the rush of work in building the station.”

He added the MTR will resolve the seepage problem by grouting, although it is hard to estimate exactly how much time is needed.
