MTR quality awards for contractors

Hong Kong’s MTR Corporation has awarded its major contractors for their outstanding performance and dedication in construction quality, worksite safety, environmental management and stakeholder engagement in its predominantly tunnelled five new railway projects. It has been the seventh presentation ceremony which are made at its biannual Quality, Safety, Environmental and Stakeholder Engagement Awards ceremony today (Wednesday, 18 September 2013).

Speaking at the ceremony, Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet Ngor, Chief Secretary for Administration, said, “safety, manpower training, innovation, sustainability, as well as forging consensus, are challenges that our construction industry is facing. Yet, they also present opportunities for the industry to excel.” Mrs Lam commended winners of the Awards for their outstanding performance in these areas and devotion to creating a quality construction industry.

The Grand Safety Award went to Bachy Soletanche – Laing O’Rourke Joint Venture working on the Express Rail Link Project. It was recognised for its success in fostering the culture of works safety within the entire workforce; the Environmental Award was won by Dragages-Maeda-BSG Joint Venture of the West Island Line Project for its success in reducing construction noise by adopting a specially-designed acoustic deck; the Gold Stakeholder Engagement Award was snapped up by Samsung – Hsin Chong Joint Venture of the Shatin to Central Link Project for its timely and proactive communication with the local community in response to the structural integrity concerns of old building along the site; and, the Gold Quality Award was awarded to Leighton-John Holland Joint Venture of the South Island Line (East) Project for its concerted effort in careful planning and risk assessment before commencement of works on site.

The MTR Projects Quality, Safety, Environmental and Stakeholder Engagement Awards was launched in 2010 to recognise and promote outstanding performance by contractors and consultants in the new railway projects to set a benchmark for the local construction industry. The new railway projects are the West Island Line, the Kwun Tong Line Extension, the South Island Line (East), the Express Rail Link, and the Shatin to Central Link.
