Lawmakers give the green light for construction of HK$3.1b arts hub basement

The Legislative Council’s Finance Committee has approved a HK$3.1 billion funding request to pay for the construction of parts of an underground complex at the West Kowloon Cultural District, RTHK reports.

As well as the main structure, some of the money will go on a 230-meter underground road.

Pro-democracy lawmakers were upset that no principal officials were on hand in Legco to answer their questions about the project. They also complained that there’s no estimate yet on how much the whole basement will cost in total.

The public broadcaster reports that the government has to wait for a consultant’s report and it will be able to provide the figure early next year.
