Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge projects in full swing

The target of completing essential works of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge for its local projects to be commissioned by end-2017 remains unchanged as construction workers have been working hard to overcome difficulties and challenges of these projects, the Highways Department said.

Responding to media enquiries on the progress of the bridge projects, it said the HZMB Authority and the governments of the three places have been reviewing the progress of the bridge projects and overcoming the difficulties and challenges concerned.

Regarding the bridge section of the Main Bridge, the department said the difficulties encountered under the extreme conditions in the open sea during the construction stage have been overcome and it anticipated the Main Bridge will enter the most critical stage next year.

As regards the Tuen Mun – Chek Lap Kok Link project, it said the works of it are in full swing, noting that the initial plan is for the Southern Connection of it to tie in with that of the HZMB Main Bridge whilst the Northern Connection is targeted for completion at the end of 2018.

In view of technical difficulties associated with the northern connection, the construction programme is very tight, the department said, noting that the link project cannot be completed according to the above original plan.

The department has been closely monitoring the progress of the works to overcome the technical difficulties, and will endeavor to catch up with the progress and carry out a comprehensive review on the commissioning of the link, it added.
