The open-air market will not only be an important hub for Tainan’s food supply chain, but also a place for the public to meet, socialize, and relax
TAIPEI -MVRDV, the Dutch architecture firm that just announced its plan for the Twin Towers in Taipei last year, revealed its new project in Taiwan Wednesday, which is an open-air produce market with a gigantic green canopy in a suburb of Tainan City.
After six years of planning and preliminary preparation, the construction of the new Tainan Xinhua Fruit and Vegetable Market began last year following a groundbreaking ceremony in December, but little had been known about the details of the construction until the architecture firm made the announcement this week.
“Tainan, in my opinion, is one of those towns which is so beautiful to me because maybe most of its nature, agriculture fields, farms, sea, and mountains”, said Winy Maas, co-founder of MVRDV.
“Tainan Market can become a building that symbolizes this beauty as it compliments both landscape and its surrounding environment. It is completely functional and caters to the needs for auctioning, selling and buying goods, but its terraced roof with its collection of growing products will allow visitors to take in the landscape while escaping from bustle below,” added Maas.
The eight-hectare market is located in a suburban area on Guanziling Industry Road and accessible from Highway 3 and several public transport links in the region.
It will not only be an important hub for Tainan’s food supply chain, the third largest one in the island country, but also a destination for the public to meet, socialize, and enjoy the landscape and recreational activities, according to the architectural firm.
The main structure consists of a simple open square that allows for plenty of natural ventilation. It is topped by a gigantic undulating ceiling with a green farming roof and concentric terraces that allow the public to take in views of the surrounding landscape.
On one side of the main structure stands a four-story building. It will house the market’s administrative offices, a restaurant, and an exhibition center where agricultural products from the region can be displayed, making the building ideal for school visits, said the film.
The budget of the project is estimated at US$17.3 million (NT$539 million), and the completion of construction is scheduled in 2020, according to the Tainan City Government.
