construction of new public housing to be completed in 9 months

About 18,000 public housing units will be completed in the coming nine months, while 2,160 Home Ownership Scheme flats will be finished within two to three years, Acting Secretary for Transport & Housing Yau Shing-mu said today.

Mr Yau told lawmakers that a total of 17,800 units are distributed among six public housing estates in Sha Tin, North District, Yuen Long, Kwun Tong and Sham Shui Po. The Housing Department will arrange in-take as soon as the public rental housing estates are complete.

He added that the first batch of 2,160 new Home Ownership Scheme projects are located in Sha Tin, Tsuen Wan, Tsing Yi and Yuen Long and are expected to be completed in 2016-17. The Housing Authority plans to launch the pre-sale for the flats by end of this month.

On the issue of reintroducing tenancy control measures, Mr Yau said studies suggest such measures could have an unintended effect on housing supply, so it would not be in the public’s interest to rush into implementing them.
