Pending the outcome of a feasibility study the first phrase of construction for the planned monorail line for Bandung is scheduled to get underway in mid-2015 according to an official.
“With the support of the central government and the local governments and residents of Bandung and surrounding areas, the ground-breaking will commence in July 2015,” said Iwa Karniwa, an official with the West Java provincial administration.
With an estimated total cost $1.84 billion, the project is to be split into five phases and is scheduled to be completed in 2025.
The first stage of the monorail line will run 29 kilometers from the Leuwipanjang to Tanjung Sari areas, at a cost of $578 million.
Iwa was quoted as saying that ‘the soft launch of the project was held in September 2014 after an agreement was signed by the five local administrations through whose jurisdiction the monorail network will pass: Bandung municipality, Bandung district, Cimahi municipality, West Bandung district and Sumedang district’.
Iwa went to say that the construction would be carried out by a Chinese-Indonesian joint venture called Jabar Moda Transportasi. The company is currently completing a business plan and awaiting the outcome of a feasibility study being conducted by an international consultant.
Iwa added that the West Java administration would issue regulations in support of the project, including a revamped railway master plan to allow the monorail network to connect to the existing commuter rail line of state-owned railway operator Kereta Api Indonesia.
