The Civil Engineering & Development Department’s Public Works Laboratories held a demonstration today to show the testing services they provide to Government projects to ensure their quality and safety.
The laboratories conducted nearly 600,000 tests last year, covering major infrastructure projects including the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge and the Central-Wan Chai Bypass.
As reinforced concrete is widely used for construction in the city, its strength and those of its steel bars are widely tested by the laboratories. They test the evenness of newly constructed or repaved roads, to minimise the risk of accidents. The effectiveness of impact-absorbing surfacing materials in playgrounds is also tested to ensure child safety.
