Commuters in the eastern parts of Singapore are in for a treat as the areas who are currently not served by the rail network will finally have access to the 13-km stretch of the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) stations.
According to a press release by the Land Transport Authority (LTA), three civil contracts have been awarded for the construction of Tanjong Rhu, Katong Park, and Marine Terrace stations along the TEL.
As part of the 43-km long TEL, the east coast stretch will also connect commuters to the Thomson stretch of the TEL, which serves the north-south corridor, the LTA said.
“The East Coast stretch will have nine stations, including a station which interchanges with the DTL at Sungei Bedok,” the press release added.
The east coast stretch of the TEL is expected to be completed in two stages, with the first seven stations from Tanjong Rhu to Bayshore expected to be ready in 2023, while the remaining two stations will be completed in 2024.
For the contracts, the construction of the Tanjong Rhu station, along with the associated tunnels, has been awarded to Bachy Soletanche Singapore – Wai Fong Construction Joint Venture at a contract sum of approximately S$294 million.
Meanwhile, the Katong Park contract has been awarded to Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co at $293m, while the Marine Terrace contract has been awarded to Ssangyong Engineering & Construction – Hyundai Engineering & Construction joint venture.
“Construction works for the above civil contracts are expected to start by the first quarter of 2016 and targeted to complete in 2023,” the LTA said.
